Dumping a lot of lands with this ability won't just put you ahead on mana, but also thins out your deck and makes it more likely that you draw the cards you need to win
This is great in any green deck, but it gets even better in a Werewolf deck, because if the creature you put into play is either a Wolf or Werewolf, you can untap the Piper and do it all again
A creature has to actually get its first +1/+1 counter before Hardened Scales can modify it
